Mercy Medical Center is now asking residents to refrain from calling the emergency room.
Hospital staff say they have recently been dealing with a higher call volume, and they are partly attributing that increase to people`s concerns about seasonal influenza and H1N1.
Now they`re looking for help from the community so they can focus more intently on patient care.
"We`re asking if the patients have a medical concern, they can`t wait till the clinic hours the next day, that they come and be seen by our emergency room physician who is there 24 hours a day," says Karen Bercier, the manager of the ER and OB departments. "And we also ask the public refrain from calling the emergency room for medical advice."
Bercier says other hospitals have adopted similar practices for their Emergency Room departments.
For people concerned about H1N1, Bercier suggests visiting the CDC website or calling the North Dakota Health Department`s swine flue hotline at 1-866-207-2880.
