New Home Construction | Video

Dickinson has seen its fair share of national attention lately. But tonight, it`s positive.

Because of thriving new construction in the city, Dickinson leaders are hosting the state`s Area Builders Association`s annual meeting. It`s even drawing national attention.

Bob Nielsen of the National Association of Builders is in town to learn more about what Dickinson is doing right, when the rest of the country is struggling. "Homebuilding is what brings a country out of a recession, and so it`s extremely important that we get homebuilding going again across the country," said Nielsen, the group`s Second Vice Chairman.

Nielsen likes Dickinson`s decision to pass a $100,000 two-year tax exemption for new home buyers, along with another tax exemption for builders stuck with unsold new construction. "Certainly, Dickinson is a bright spot, as is all of North and South Dakota, and so we hope there are lessons to be learned," said Nielsen.

One local homebuilder finds these exemptions very beneficial. "That helps to put in a sprinkler system, the savings from the taxes, to curtains, to finishing a yard. It all helps," said Tracy Heiser, a contractor from Dickinson.

Dickinson`s chapter president says building permits have been strong for both residential and commercial construction, and he foresees solid growth to continue.
