Mixed Mammogram Messages | Video
Anne Kelly
11/19/2009
Health reform isn`t the only thing topic causing confusion among the public lately .Mammogram guidelines have been too. Earlier this week a government task force recommended women wait until their 50 to begin screening themselves for breast cancer and then do so every two years. Today, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathy Sebelius said despite the panel`s finding, women should keep doing what they`ve always been doing.

As president of the North Dakota affiliate of the Susan G. Komen, Race for the Cure, Tara Lacher says the mixed messages may be confusing for women, but regardless it`s important women hear both sides and be educated on the issue. Lacher, who knits scarves for cancer survivors, says the Susan G. Komen foundation recommends women stick with current recommendations to get mammograms starting at age 40.

"I think women are scared," says Lacher. "I think they`re really scared. Our whole health care system and economy is in turmoil right and I think this only adds fuel to the fire. I know a lot of people that I give scarves to that are very, very concerned because they`re finding cancer or lumps themselves."

Part of the government task recommendations include women stop self examinations of their breasts. Sebelius says the task force recommendations, and the controversy from them, show a great need for more research into breast cancer prevention.
