The chancellor of the state university system says the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Council has not discussed the possibility of a reservation-wide vote on the University of North Dakota`s Fighting Sioux nickname.
The state Board of Higher Education has said it would retire the nickname and Indian head logo unless the state`s two namesake tribes sign 30-year agreements giving permission. The Spirit Lake tribe voted overwhelmingly to support the nickname and approved a resolution giving UND "perpetual" permission to use it.
Chancellor Bill Goetz said Thursday that he met with Standing Rock tribal chairman Charles Murphy and his lawyers last week. Goetz said he was told the nickname is not a priority and the council has a moratorium on a tribal vote.
Goetz said the issue has caused arguments among Standing Rock family members and has created a divisive environment on the reservation. |
