Mountain Lion Spotted in Dickinson | Video
Andrew Keller
11/18/2009
It`s not that unusual to see a cat that doesn`t belong to you in your back yard, but what if it`s five feet long and weighs more than a hundred pounds?

"I was cooking on my stove here, and I came to wash my hands, and I look out and I saw my pheasants eating by the fence and I saw a mountain lion in the back behind them, and I called for my husband and son and went out on the deck. It was quite amazing," recalled Marla Knaup.

"A mountain lion, that there scares a person real bad, that was very close when he was up here," said Marla`s husband Fran.

Fran and Marla Knaup live in north Dickinson, on 4th Street, and that`s why they say they can`t believe what they saw.

"It was just breathtaking right away, and nervous, but yeah, you could tell exactly it was a mountain lion," said Fran.

The Knaups say they recently sighted the wild animal over by this shed in their back yard.

"Big old mountain lion, just walking in our back yard," said Mike Knaup, Fran and Marla`s son.

Mike grabbed his cell phone and started rolling as the lion walked around. Here`s some footage he took. It`s not the highest quality, but if you look closely to where he`s pointing, you can see a little white dot cross the screen.

"It`s scary because it was so close, we have dogs out here, there`s always people walking their dogs out here," said Fran.

The Knaups say a cougar roaming the streets of Dickinson is an issue because they worry about the safety of their animals. They say they`re not the only people that have spotted this mountain lion, and they hope their story raises awareness in others.

According to the Knaups, a veterinarian says the cat is close to town because it was recently hit by a vehicle. Police say mountain lions can be extremely dangerous, so if you spot it, call Dickinson Police at (701) 456-7759.
