The Badlands Activity Center on the Dickinson State campus has been five years in the making. The field was finished this fall so that the football team could play there, but much of the new facility was still under construction and was scheduled to be finished next year. But with favorable weather, crews have been getting a lot more work done than anticipated, and now it`s almost finished.
Dickinson State University`s new Badlands Activities Center has come a long way since ground was first broken about a year ago. And the school`s athletic director couldn`t be any more excited.
"There will be no one between Bozeman, Montana; Minneapolis, Laramie, Wyoming; nobody will have an on-campus facility like this facility. And our students are very proud of that," said DSU Athletic Director Roger Ternes.
With the field, track, lights and scoreboard all complete, construction crews are working hard to finish the building`s exterior and sitework. Construction is moving along right on schedule, thanks in part to this unusually nice weather.
"We didn`t know if we were going to be able to do it this year, but with this good weather, it`s offered the opportunity to get this asphalt in. So, we`re going for it," said Mike Wallace, a field engineer with Mortenson Construction.
Major exterior work is expected to wrap up before winter strikes, and that`s when the contractor says they can focus on the building`s interior. When the $16 million project is finished this spring, students and residents will get to enjoy this state of the art facility.
"We wanted to make sure that we were in touch with a lot of different entities when we put this project together, so that we were meeting the needs of southwest North Dakota," said Ternes.
The school`s athletic director says the building`s 5,000 sq. ft. concourse level will not only serve fans during games, but will also host conventions and trade shows for the region. DSU administrators say the BAC is a crown jewel to show to prospective students.
