Freezin for a Reason

| The signs say Freezin` for a Reason. But even though it`s not exactly freezing, the reason these people are standing along Broadway still exists. To raise awareness of homelessness in Minot. "It`s important because a lot of people don`t realize that there`s a population that`s living paycheck to paycheck," the group`s chair Renelou Gonzalez said, "and that it could just take something to happen in their lives and they could be homeless." And so they`re attracting attention - hoping that people will stop by the parking lot and make a donation to the Minot Area Homeless Coalition. They`re taking non-perishable items, cash, and checks to help out local food pantries. "Generally we bring about a ton of food in each year," the group`s advisor Deb DeWitz said. "That`s the big thing about being in Minot, North Dakota or North Dakota period," Executive Director of the MAHC Mac McLeod said. "Big hearts and people helping people." But they`ll take more than your non-perishables and cash donations. If you`ve got time to give, you can come on out and hold a sign for Freezin` for a Reason. "Anybody who comes out, not only can they hold a sign. But we`ll teach them a lot of things about the people in Minot who really have this need," DeWitz said. And the warm weather is helping get people to drop off food. "When it`s nice like this people are more likely to see us, go to the grocery store, pick something up, and stop back," DeWitz said. And everything that gets collected Wednesday will stay local, right here in Minot. If you can’t make it Wednesday, the Minot Area Homeless Coalition takes donations all year long. |
