The chancellor of North Dakota`s university system is meeting tomorrow with the chairman of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.
Bill Goetz says he and Charles Murphy will be discussing the University of North Dakota`s Fighting Sioux nickname and whether the tribe is willing to endorse it.
Goetz says he`s not expecting any decisions to be made. Murphy has said he`s willing to discuss the issue with higher education officials as long as there are no deadlines. He says the nickname issue isn`t at the top of his priority list.
Goetz is meeting with Murphy Friday afternoon at the tribe`s offices in Fort Yates.
The Spirit Lake Sioux tribal council has endorsed UND`s nickname and Indian head logo, but the Standing Rock Sioux tribal council hasn`t approved it.
A group of Spirit Lake Sioux tribal members have gotten a temporary restraining order from a judge that bars the Board of Higher Education from changing the nickname until Dec. 9.
They say the Standing Rock tribe should have another year to decide whether to endorse the nickname. |
