Here in North Dakota, we all know what winter means. Six months of snow, cold, wind..and potentially hazardous conditions.
And meteorologists begin using words that are so common here, we may not truly hear and take heed. That can be dangerous.
For children, the first snow storm of the year often means a day off from school. But for adults, it can mean treacherous commutes with slippery roads, low visibilities, and fender benders.
But understanding the difference between an advisory and a warning can save your life.
When there`s a threat of dangerous weather, the National Weather Service will issue an advisory as a heads up. Advisories are issued when weather conditions will cause significant inconvenience and if ignored can cause hazardous consequences.
Next is a watch. It`s stronger than an advisory and tells you that nasty weather is likely in the next 12 to 48 hours. Watches are declared so you can prepare and plan for the dangerous conditions.
A warning is the next step in the process. It means that a storm is occurring or is fast-approaching, and you need to take action.
Some of the main watches and warnings you should listen for are winter storm watches, winter storm warnings, and a blizzard warning.
With the winter storm watch, expect to see severe winter weather in the next 12 to 48 hours, including heavy snowfall, blizzard conditions, and freezing rain or sleet.
When the storm gets closer and is imminent, it is upgraded to a winter storm warning.
Finally, the most important warning to pay attention to is a blizzard warning. Blizzards include heavy snow and strong winds that will cause blinding snow, drifts, and life threatening wind chill. If you are not prepared for one of these, they can be deadly.
