"Until it`s safe to drive, we`ll keep it closed," says Bismarck City Engineer Mel Bullinger.
River Road resembled an accordion or small earthquake zone just six weeks ago, with portions of the road sunken in three feet. Today, it doesn`t look to be in shambles anymore. And at Tuesday night`s Bismarck City Commission meeting, Bullinger was the bearer of good news.
"The efforts of everyone involved, it seems River Road will actually be open this year," says Bullinger.
River Road serves as a major artery that connects the growing northern portion of Bismarck to the south. Bullinger reported a few weeks ago this road probably wouldn`t be open until next spring or summer, and if by chance it was, it would be temporary gravel. He said weather would play a significant role in whether the project would be complete. And the weather has cooperated to the fullest extent.
"We have been fortunate with the seasonably warm weather and thanks to a large part to the contractors, it would seem now River Road will be surfaced this week if the weather holds out, and the guardrail should be installed next week so we look forward to open it maybe the latter part of next week or certainly the week of Thanksgiving," says Bullinger.
He says everything has been ahead of schedule. The piling that needed to be driven to hold the soil in place took about half the time expected. And with the weather continuing to stay decent, asphalt plants are still open.
"It`s very favorable music to my ears, yes."
"People can have a reasonable expectation now that it should be open for the, should stay open for the course of the winter."
Bullinger seems optimistic this road will be complete very soon, but remember, if the weather turns bad, that could throw the whole thing off schedule.
