| Holiday season is already in the air for many shoppers. And they say they`re spending more this year than they did a year ago. "The worst of the bad times we had with the economy bypassed North Dakota," Brent Larocque of Bismarck said. "I have a generally more upbeat feeling about the economy and shopping." "I haven`t been feeling the effects of any type of recession or any type of economy slowdown,` Airman Michael Wilson said. And local businesses are noticing the better attitudes. "Obviously nationally everybody`s worried about the economy," said Rob Port, the manager of Home of economy in Minot. "Our customers seem pretty confident." Retailers like Home of Economy are relying on their customers` loyalty for strong holiday sales. "We have a pretty long tradition of people buying their toys and things like that here," Port said. But other Magic City stores aren`t taking any chances. Many owners still remember last year when "December just kind of stopped." So downtown businesses including Gourmet Chef are offering special opportunities for holiday shoppers. "We have a $200 gift basket we`re giving away," said Denise Linbo, the owner of Gourmet Chef. "We have an open house. And then we have people put in a monetary donation for charity at each location." The specialty shop`s owner says the idea is to create buzz and draw in seasonal shoppers. "It`s just something different we`re doing," Lindbo said. "Trying to help out the community, have a promotion for our stores and make it good for everyone." Because a strong holiday season is good for the bottom line. |
