Montana Governor Brian Schweitzer is in Bismarck, speaking at the Energy Expo.
Today, he spoke to energy leaders about clean energy development and its impact on the region.
Schweitzer said America needs to build a home-grown energy system.
And he says he believes coal could help generate billions of dollars for North Dakota and neighboring Montana.
Schweitzer says North Dakota and Montana contain nearly 50-percent of America`s coal.
While he acknowledges that there will be some negative environmental effects from coal production, he says the benefits will be much greater.
This year`s third annual energy expo wasn`t totally without incident.
When asked what his objective was for attending the event, Montana Governor Schweitzer set off some speculation.
Those who listened to Schweitzer speak this morning on stage say the Montana Governor sounded sarcastic when he talked about oil from the Bakken Formation belonging in part to Montana.
But when we asked him later what his objectives were in visiting North Dakota, he had this to say.
We did contact both Governor Hoeven and Schweitzer`s offices late this afternoon.
Schweitzer`s calls went unreturned.
Hoeven`s office says they believed Schweitzer was just trying to be funny.
