School Board Discusses Elementary Boundaries | Video
Andrew Keller
11/9/2009
A new elementary school opens in northeast Bismarck next school year, but it`s still not clear which students will attend there. The Bismarck School Board discussed potential attendance boundaries for Sunrise Elementary tonight. It`s being built to relieve crowding in northside schools.

Unfortunately, wherever the boundaries are placed, there are some families within the boundaries that don`t want their children at Sunrise, and there are others outside the boundaries that do want their children there. But the board has made clear that not everyone is going to get his own way.

"In the end, somebody`s going to have to move, and there`s no question about that, and I think there`s no way around that fundamental premise," says Bismarck Superintendent Paul Johnson.

"If they`re going to do it, let`s go ahead and redistrict it all at once, and include the middle schools with it, unless of course, that`s an entirely different animal you guys don`t want to tackle," says parent Brian Balerud.

Tonight, the board agreed that boundary revisions may need to include Lincoln and WillMoore schools as well. The district will send letters to families that may be affected and hold public meetings.
