Deer Season Underway
11/6/2009
Halloween was less than a week ago, and Thanksgiving is about three weeks away.

But today is also a big holiday, especially in North Dakota.

Today at noon, deer hunters took their first shots at tagging a big buck or a doe and bringing home a freezer full of venison.

There were 144,440 deer gun licenses this year.

That`s down about three percent last year.

And hunters with those tags found themselves up against a lot of challenges.

There are thousands of acres of unharvested crop in the state.

That makes it even more difficult for hunters, because deer can easily run into corn fields or sunflower fields, and hide.

Unusually warm weather for opening day makes things uncomfortable for hunters, as well.

"Number one, when you`re out walking, you see my son here is basically going without a shirt because it`s so hot out," says Dan Oster, a deer hunter. "Physically-wise, it doesn`t really bother me but the deer don`t want to move. They`re laying down wherever it`s cool, wherever they`re at."

The season runs through November 22.

The archery season runs through January 3.
