Roach Racing | Video
11/6/2009
The Annual Great American Bug Race has plenty of fans.

The event has been bugging people for 27 years at Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Used at a fundraiser, participants can buy a runner for 50 cents.

Most of the insect contestants are cockroaches.

Each roach coach is responsible for retrieving their bugs to race in another heat, and it`s easier said than done.

There are strict rules such as "no bugs eating the competition, no adding extra legs or wings, and no performance-enhancing drugs."

That kind of unsportsmanlike conduct will get you disqualified.

"The bugs race in heats, so we have two heats at a time and the objective is for the trainer, the owner of the bug, to let the bug run outside the circle. And the first bug that does that wins that heat," said Becky Peeling with Palm Beach Atlantic University.

There are some problems facing even the best trainer.

Circling birds are a potential threat, and coaches must remember to step lightly around their athletes.

Winners not only gain bragging rights...they also get $100 for having the fastest insect.
