Finding the balance between work, school and family can be difficult for anyone, but now one state college is taking steps to make that balance easier for soldiers.
"It`s not an easy task to do. You have certain responsibilities as a student. You have certain responsibilities towards your studies and then you also have certain responsibilities as a solider towards your training," said John Pitsiladis, a Military Outreach Specialist for the Army National Guard.
Finding the happy medium between life as a solider and as a student is something John had to figure out first hand.
"The entire year you`re out there, it`s go, go, go. Everything is so serious. You`re concentrating on missions. You`re trying not to think about home and when you come back, it`s a really big adjustment," he said.
To help soldiers make that adjustment, Bismarck State College has teamed up with the Service Member and Family Support Division for the Outreach Event for Military Members. 25 college representatives and support providers are helping to address military benefits. The Military Service Center in Bismarck says these are benefits many soldiers don`t know they have.
"A lot of the education benefits and the past 911 GI Bill, the tuition assistance for the guard and reserve, the different bonuses that are available, counseling options that they might have," said Kristina Higbee of the Service Member and Family Support Division.
"You`re going to have good times, you`re going to have your bad times and you just have to tough it out. You just have to think of all the benefits that the military does provide you," said John.
