First H1N1 Flu Death in ND | Video
Anne Kelly
10/26/2009
The swine flu, or complications from it, has killed more than 1,000 Americans since it first appeared.

Until now, North Dakota hadn`t suffered any deaths.

We all knew it was coming, and today the announcement came of the first swine flu death in the state. The North Dakota Department of Health says the man, was a resident of the northwestern portion of the state and over the age of 60. He had underlying medical conditions that likely contributed to his death as well. The Department of Health says this loss should remind us the flu, is a serious illness, one that`s circulating in large numbers right now.

"It is estimated that more than 90-percent of the influenza circulating in North Dakota is 2009 H1N1 and the fact that H1N1 vaccine is slow to arrive in the state has been a very frustrating experience for many people, including ourselves, the public, and for providers," says state epidemiologist Kirby Kruger.

The state says while numbers of the vaccination are limited right now, they do expect shipments of the vaccine to continue to come in, and eventually there should be enough for everyone in the state.
