Official Says Park Horse Roundup Went `Perfectly`
10/22/2009
The superintendent of Theodore Roosevelt National Park says a three-day roundup of wild horses went "perfectly."

Valerie Naylor says about 80 horses are to be sold at auction in Dickinson Friday, to help keep the herd to a manageable level. Another 85 horses were released back into the park.

This year`s roundup was the first time park horses were given a contraceptive vaccine that might eventually eliminate the need for roundups and auctions.

Naylor says 29 mares were vaccinated and 28 received a placebo. The effectiveness of the vaccine will be measured over the next several years.

Naylor says it will be at least another three years before the park has another wild horse roundup.
