It was literally the difference between life and death.
Wednesday a Surrey man was recognized for his exemplary motorcycle safety.
Cody Hartung received a “Saved by the Helmet” Award from the North Dakota Safety Council and the Highway Patrol.
This summer, Hartung was struck by a deer while riding his motorcycle to work in Velva.
Hartung says the fact that he wore a helmet saved his life.
"The helmet was a life saver in my opinion," Hartung said. "To be knocked out while wearing a good helmet is proof that it would have been so much worse."
When buying a helmet, look for the Department of Transportation sticker to make sure it meets safety standards.
