Mandan Diesel Cleanup Moves Ahead
Marie Arceo
10/3/2009
Diesel contamination in the basement of Mandan`s Law Enforcement Center could be cleaned up by late fall.

The Morton County Commission could award a contract for the cleanup as early as Thursday.

Bids range between $121,000 and $241,000.

BNSF Railway in 2004 agreed to pay more than $30 million in cash and real estate to the state and the city of Mandan to settle a lawsuit over the diesel spill beneath

downtown Mandan, though it did not admit liability.

Rising ground water caused water and fumes from the diesel spill to seep into the Law Enforcement Center`s basement.

All the offices in the basement were relocated a couple of years ago, but the basement still is used for other purposes such as storage.
