A Chamber of Commerce is a big asset to business owners in a community.
That`s true no matter the size of the business, or the size of the town.
About a year ago, some business owners in Fort Yates decided to form a chamber, in order to promote local businesses and develop a better sense of community.
There aren`t even a dozen businesses in Fort Yates, but nearly all of them are members of the year-old Chamber of Commerce.
"There`s a lot of positive people, and with positive-ness comes positive results," says Jody Luger, of Club Diamond Z.
Luger started his bar and grill a few years ago, and has had a lot of success. And he knows it`s hard for new businesses to get up and running in town.
"When you have a sense of community, businesses thrive," Luger says. "We`re not there yet."
But he`s dreaming big about what Ft. Yates can be. And he hopes that having a chamber of commerce will result in a more unified community, with more businesses, and lower unemployment.
"We can serve as a platform to unite the community," Luger says.
Loretta Bad Heart Bull opened her coffee stand about three years ago. When Luger first approached her about a chamber of commerce...
"I was real excited because we need something that pulls us together and unifies us," says Bad Heart Bull.
She says the community has so many different components, among the tribal government, city and county leadership, and other interests, that it can be hard for the business community to have a voice that`s heard.
"We`ve started looking at how we can support one another," says Bad Heart Bull.
Whether that means helping new businesses find wholesale suppliers, or increase advertising, she says it`s something easier done with a group, rather than as an individual.
Luger says he thinks Ft. Yates can easily support two dozen businesses.
He`d like to see a strip mall, wholesalers, entertainment, and manufacturers in town.
