Small Towns Get Federal Policing Help
8/5/2009
One more cop will help prevent burnout in Cando.

It`s one of 530 small towns that qualified for help through a 1 billion-dollar federal stimulus program. Nationwide, the program will pay for 4,699 police officers.

Cando Police Chief John Rose says people in his 1,200-person town make about 50 calls a month to the police department.

He says they`re mainly disturbance or nuisance calls, but it`s been tough to keep up since one officer was lost in budget cuts two years ago.

Rose says he and another full-time officer, along with a part-timer, struggle to provide 24-7 coverage.

The $122,680 federal grant will allow him to hire another officer.

The grants were calculated based on such factors as unemployment, foreclosures and poverty rates as well as FBI crime rates.
