The dream of one day owning a home is for some, financially out of reach.
The Three Affiliated Tribes is working to develop homes on the Fort Berthold Reservation that will be affordable and available to families who previously couldn`t afford to buy.
Just outside Parshall, vast acres were once used to grow hay. Now a field of dreams is a reality for new homeowners.
"A lot of this is a dream come true to the homeowner. They are going to be able to afford housing. Some of the don`t have credit to go to the bank and get a house," says Tribal Councilman Mervin Packineau.
The Three Affiliated Tribes broke ground on June 29th on a new housing development. The "200+ Homes Initiative" will provide 210 affordable houses to families who can not afford normal financing options.
The site, just outside Parshall, is only one of the many new developments being created through this initiative. About 40 homes will be placed there, 210 throughout the reservation. So far about 400 people have applied to the program.
"It has really been a learning experience for them as well. And they had the opportunity to go through home-buyer education and also working on their credit at the same time," says Avallon Becky Knight the Executive Director of the Fort Berthold Housing Authority.
Tribe officials say a lot of work has gone into making these homes affordable to buyers. Grants and federal funding will help the new home owners to make down payments. Some will participate in a lease/purchase agreement and make payments to the tribe and housing authority.
"It is a dream come true for these people and the whole tribe," says Councilman Packineau.
Soon, that field of dreams into someone`s dream home.
Phase one will include roads and infrastructure on all of the developments. |
