On The Farm: Crops Looking Good | Video
6/17/2009
Bottineau County farmer Rollin Tonneson has a reason to smile.

"I think the crops are looking nice, they really are,” says Tonneson.

Tonneson farms near Souris and near the Canadian border where less snow fell this winter, meaning he was able to start seeding on May 5th, two weeks ahead of many other farmers.

"We are usually the last ones in the state to finish here,” says Tonneson.

He finished seeding June 3rd, later than an average year, but Tonneson isn`t complaining.

"We had excellent rain halfway through springs work and that made the soil wet all the way to the top so germination was excellent and emergence has been good," he says.

Wednesday afternoon, uncharacteristically, the wind was calm enough to get some spraying done. He hired the local elevator to get a pea field sprayed, while his brother was applying herbicide a few miles away on a wheat crop. Perhaps the biggest change in farming in recent years has been weed control and working with an agronomist.

"He and his scouts are in our fields every week and they file reports to us what the weed profile is and they make recommendations on what chemical should be used on this particular field or that particular field,” says Tonneson.

Farms are getting bigger and keeping up with constantly changing chemical applications can be confusing.

"If I had been on my farm in 1980 and somehow time warped to my farm now, I would not recognize my farm, I really wouldn`t."

What Tonneson can recognize is that his crop is off to a good start.
