City Salutes: KAT Communications | Video
Amanda Tetlak
6/2/2009
Sometimes it`s hard to engage people when it comes to talking about their health. KAT Communications in Bismarck has found a way to do it through its GoodHealthTV program it started about seven years ago.

The program is a video series that airs in health clinics and hospitals that primarily serve minorities, and the videos have proven to make a difference in many lives.

GoodhealthTV programming consists of three to five-minute videos that promote healthy lifestyles through culturally appropriate health education scenarios. The programming started with a focus on the people of the Standing Rock Sioux Nation.

"So many of the resources that were coming into them were not reflecting the culture in the communities the individuals were living in and as a result health education outreach was just not happening effectively," says Candace Muggerud, of KAT Communications.

GoodHealthTV is airing in over 30 Native American tribal communities across the country and will soon be reaching out to more in Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Alaska. Producers of the programming say they are always brainstorming ideas to educate in fun and interesting ways that patients sitting in clinic waiting rooms can`t help but watch.

"We try to include humor," says Kari Kramer, of GoodHealth TV. "We have some unique programs that we brought from the ground up. We have some re-occurring characters so we try to develop things that people can relate to, like `Oh yeah, I`ve seen this before and it`s funny so I`m going to watch it again.`"

And KAT Communications says survey results show its programming is making a difference.

"Over 79-percent of the individuals in waiting rooms indicated that they were watching it and 70-percent of them indicated that they left with new health information," Muggerud says.

And KAT Communications says that`s the exact reason they invest so much in GoodHealthTV programming.
