Severe Allergies Call for Extreme Measures | Video
Andrew Keller
4/22/2009
For some, spring is the beginning of allergy season. But for others, the allergy season never stops. Tanner Wanner, 3, is just like most kids his age, full of endless energy. But there is one thing that sets him apart from other three year olds, and that`s a severe case of allergies. Wheat, oats, peanuts, soybeans, and sorghum are all life-threatening ingredients for Tanner, but eggs are the worst.

"Not only if he eats eggs or anything with eggs, but if he has any contact with crumbs left on a table or if someone that has eaten eggs kisses him, he can have an allergic reaction," says Tanner`s mother Carrie Wanner.

For a mother with a child who has severe allergies, one of her major concerns is taking him into a public place, like school. But fortunately in Tanner`s situation, his school accomodates.

"We are a peanut-free building, so we have absolutely no peanut butter, no peanuts in the building, we wipe things down with disinfectant everyday, as soon as the kids get in the morning, they all go wash their hands," says Prairie Preschool Principal Denise Soehren.

Soehren says Prairie Preschool in Fairfield went peanut-free a year ago because of Tanner. She works closely with his mother, making sure Tanner is cared for properly in the event of an emergency.

"I don`t think anyone really realizes the severity of it. I think that`s the hardest part about a food allergy, is realizing that it is a life or death situation," says Soehren.

"It`s very scary, you just take things day by day, and just educating people has been key, since there`s no cure for food allergies, it`s very important," says Wanner.

The efforts put forth by the preschool gives Carrie peace of mind when she sends Tanner to school.

"It`s very easy to let him out of the house and send him there, knowing they`re doing the best they can to make it safe," Wanner says.

Governor Hoeven has signed a proclamation submitted by Carrie Wanner proclaiming April 10-16 Food Allergy Awareness Week in North Dakota.
