Roads in McHenry County are badly damaged.
Some of the worst areas are around Granville and Upham.
"Theres a lot of roads out there its unbelievable we have 53 townships and virtually every township has been affected with damage," says Vernon Kongslie, McHenry County Commissioner.
"Terrific impact to the county and just beginning to assess what the real damages may be as time goes on," says Bob Indvika, Project Manager.
With so many roads needing repairs, the county is first working on roads that are accessible.
While County road 11 north of Granville should be re-opened by Thursday, April 23rd, other parts of the road still need repairs.
"County Road 17 from County Road 11 to Bantry there`s a structure on there that has washed out on both the east and west abutments and water has been across the road to the east of that structure," says Indvika.
Repairs to the roads could take as long as two months.
Some roads might not be fully graveled until the summer.
Floods are not only making it difficult to assess the damage to some roads, they are also making it difficult for contractors to do their work.
"They can`t even get materials. We have to haul it from longer distances such as Minot or neighboring counties," says Kongslie.
The amount of the damages continue to grow and it could get costly.
"I`m sure we`re in the hundreds of thousands is the way it appears," says Indvika
With many roads still under water, the danger is far from over.
"Use extreme caution when driving the township roads and county roads in McHenry County that there could be washouts and dangerous spots," says Kongslie.
"McHenry County is going to be impacted for quite awhile that is for sure," says Indvika.
Anyone who thinks a road may be dangerous should contact authorities. |
