Golf courses are usually built near water, so when the Missouri River and Apple Creek flooded in Burleigh County, the golf course nearby took on water. Unlike the homes and businesses in those areas, the golf courses might actually benefit from all that water.
As the water levels at Apple Creek rose over the past week, people living in that area prepared for the water to start spilling out of its banks. Besides affecting homes, the flooding of Apple Creek also took its toll on the Apple Creek Country Club. Even though most of the course is only accessible by boat right now, the damage to the country club is expected to be minimal.
"As far as any damage to the golf course we don`t expect any. The ground was still froze when it happened. The grass is doormat, so it`s just a matter of cleaning it up, get the silt off and all the reeds, so really not too much damage," says general manager and golf pro Ty Hauglie.
To get the course back into playing shape, Mother Nature first has to supply some warm, dry weather to bring Apple Creek back where it belongs.
"Once it`s inside the banks we will do a lot of pumping just to speed it along, but after that it`s just unfortunately wind and heat," adds Hauglie who says once the course is ready for play, golfers should actually notice some improvements from an early April flood.
"Last year we were really dry, so we`ve gone from one extreme to the next. Really, this is going to help our grass as far as getting green in a hurry, so we can look forward to that. The unfortunate is we have some bunker work we have to do, so our bunkers are probably going to be better than they were last year although it is a little extra work for us."
Apple Creek expects to be open by the first week of May, and Bismarck Parks and Rec says the city`s public courses should all be open by the end of the month.
