Apple Creek in Burleigh County is falling from Tuesday`s peak, but it`s still causing plenty of problems. High water combined with gusty winds was enough to keep some people stranded on their property. Apple Creek near Menoken peaked at 17.62 feet. It dropped steadily Wednesday to 16.9 feet and is expected to continue falling. Nearby residents are glad.
Apple Creek started to threaten surrounding homes on Easter Sunday. By Wednesday afternoon, water had completely surrounded Denise Prinz, trapping her in her home.
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer just recently, and the chemotherapy starts tomorrow morning. So we were going to try to cancel," she says.
But thanks to some kind-hearted neighbors who rescued her by boat, Denise can now keep her important appointment.
Jeff Luptak rescued Denise and says, "With the wind, it was blowing the front end around a bit, but it wasn`t too bad."
"We just can`t believe it. We`re just so grateful," says Denise.
Rescue was all but impossible for the Smith household. Apple Creek Road was submerged under several feet of water. What used to be a road has now been turned into a dangerous white water rapid crossing. And winds of over 30 miles per hour weren`t making the situation any better.
"It`s pretty treacherous to try to walk out here I think," explains Pat Smith. "No sense risking someone`s life trying to forge through this fast-moving water."
But the Smiths do have some dry land to move around on so they can at least get outside. And inside isn`t such a bad place, either.
"We`re all safe. We`re dry. We`re watching satellite TV and good food. So we`re not suffering," notes Pat Smith.
And they might have to "not suffer" a bit longer. Apple Creek is not forecast to drop below flood stage until Saturday morning.
On Wednesday evening, 63 roads in the county were partially closed. One of them is Apple Creek Road between 52nd St. NE and 93rd St. NE.
