No Major Flooding Issues in Minot | Video
4/14/2009
Despite high water levels, Minot city officials are not concerned about the Souris running through the Magic City.

Tuesday morning city and county officials gathered for a community press conference. The river is expected to crest in Minot this afternoon at 1547 feet and that will last for several days.

The National Guard has finished filling in low spots and even with the rain expected this week, there is no cause for concern.

"The National Weather Service has predicted rain later this week and this will increase the level of the river and lenghten the crest. The 100 year flood plain is 1549 feet. The dike system is built to 1553 at the Broadway Bridge and that is with four feet of freeboard," says Minot Mayor Curt Zimbelman.

North Dakota Governor John Hoeven was in Minot Tuesday to survey the areas effected by flooding and offer his support and resources.

"Our purpose of being up here is to make sure you have the resources and support you need in this flood fight effort. And also to see how things are going on the ground and in the surrounding areas," says Hoeven.

Hoeven says there are about 200 guard members in the Minot area, along with equipment and helicopters. However, the guard is reserved for protection and mitigation of cities and major subdivisions, not individual property. Residents are encouraged to take precautions to protect their own homes.
