Velva Residents Prepare for River Rise | Video
4/14/2009
A mouse is normally nothing to be afraid of, but the Mouse River came raging right up to some people`s front doors in McHenry County.

"None of this was here yesterday," says Marv Sola, McHenry County Sheriff.

The Souris, also known as the Mouse River, went up another couple of feet overnight. Those who have been fighting the flood all week just can`t seem to catch a break.

"There`s so many places to be, it doesn`t seem to let us get to all of them," says Sola.

The river in Velva rose to 15.8 feet this morning.

"This morning we decided to get sandbaggers out and to close some of the roads," says Cindy Shattuck, Velva Mayor.

Troops brought their shovels and manpower to help sandbag.

"People are coming from miles to help," says Shattuck.

Students from Velva were once again sandbagging along with their peers from Towner, Granville, and Sawyer.

"Velva has a good football team and baseball team. But this is their best team right here," says Sola.

Volunteers built a dike on Karlsruhe road with the sandbags that were filled on Friday.

"If it does become a problem we want to be prepared," says Shattuck.

The Velva bridge will be blocked off once another part of the Souris River hits 15.13. That`s what the sandbags will be used for.

"We`re just preparing in case the river does decide to rise," says Shattuck.

And if it does, this town will be ready to try to trap the mouse.
