While the flooding potential in Minot is not as great as other areas along the Souris, city officials have been dealing with their own challenges...Ice Jams.
This morning in Minot an ice jam began to accumulate at the 8th Street northwest walking bridge. Luckily, water was not rising drastically. While swollen, the Souris in Minot hasn`t caused any major problems yet. The river was at 1546 feet this morning which is about 4,500 cubic feet of water per second. City officials estimate they won`t see much more than that and the levees can handle more than 7,000 cubic feet per second of water. Ice jams are their biggest concern now.
"Right now what we are doing it having the guard come in and tak a look at them. And see if they can get in their with boats to break them up or if we need to look at dropping sand or salt on them to speed up the melting. We will go from there. See what they recommend. This morning, west of 8th street, took care of itself," says Dan Jonasson the Assistant Public Works Director in Minot.
Beginning April 14th, city workers will walk the levees along the Souris in Minot 24 hours a day for the next few weeks.
