Foxholm Residents Fighting Ice Jam | Video
Nick Dreyer
4/12/2009
Instead of spending Easter with their families, Foxholm residents spent Sunday watching an ice jam plug their bridge. The town northwest of Minot is one of the areas being closely watched for potential flood problems. Earlier this week residents sandbagged trouble spots along the Des Lacs River. The big concern Sunday was large chunks of ice that gathered near the bridge, virtually stopping the flow of the river.

Brian Keller says, "Well, basically all the ice stopped here by the bridge and built up, and the water got deeper on this side of the bridge. They`re using that loader to try and pry loose the ice out here."

Some Foxholm residents were upset with the lack of help they received from Ward County and the Corps of Engineers so they took matters in their own hands. A private company had a front end loader nearby. Residents also used a long steel pipe to break up the ice chunks to get the river flowing again this evening.

Randy Beeter says, "There was an ice jam underneath the bridge, and no one was taking care of it, so we built a system on the forks here and broke it up, and we got it flowing again. It`s looking good."

Ward County officials say they were monitoring the situation today in Foxholm. The county found no homes in immediate danger and believed no action had to be taken.
