Teamwork Fuels Volunteers in Burlington | Video
Chris Twohig
4/11/2009
Residents in Burlington are paying close attention to the Des Lacs river.

Earlier this week officials decided a dike needed to be built along the river to protect several Burlington homes.

Lack of manpower Friday had many in Burlington worried their dikes would not be built in time.

Saturday however, so many volunteers showed up the sandbags could not be transported quick enough.

Greg Morlock and his son Andrew Abernathey drove more than 30 miles from Lansford after hearing Burlington was in need of volunteers.

"Just seemed like a good cause and a good day to be out here, nothing better to do on a Saturday," says Morlock.

"It feels really good you know doing a good deed today," says Abernathey.

Some parents might find it difficult to get their teenage kids up on a Saturday morning, but for this father and son team it was no problem.

"I was up before he was," says Abernathey.

"He`s pretty eager I call him Andrew eager," says Morlock.

Dean Rylander brought 15 willing workers from Minot Boy Scout Troop 433.

"We come out and help and help our community thats all part of being a Scout," says Rylander.

Instead of playing video games or watching TV on a Saturday, Ethan Bahl, one of the scouts, was having just as much fun doing some community service.

"Its actually pretty fun cause you get to work with your friends and you don`t know what they`re like until you come out here and figure out what they do and when they`re doing teamwork," says Bahl.

Teamwork has been vital in getting Burlington ready for potential flood water.

Volunteers have come from all over and even young Bahl wouldn`t expect anything less.

"Well the thing is if somebody else needed us to help we would help them cause if we needed help in Minot people would come and help so might as well help somebody when they need it," says Bahl.

Sandbags will be available on Sunday for anyone who needs them at the All Seasons Arena in Minot, Bell School, Sawyer City Hall, Valley Vegetable and at the Foxholm Church.

You will be responsible for loading them yourselves.
