Water is Helping & Hurting Ranchers | Video
4/9/2009
Residents in Sawyer are concerned about the potential of the Souris River flooding, but their main concern is the runoff from other areas.

The Souris River is expected to be two to four feet over the flood stage.

Sawyer Resident Wade Francis began filling sandbags Thursday in preparation for the worst.

"My parents home is not near the river, but the house could see some problems from the runoff, so we are beginning to sandbag to be safe," says Francis.

Koni Aho, a Sawyer resident, has been through this before and does not expect any problems.

"We`re not concerned about it at all we have some nice drainage systems that will help our property," says Aho

The floods can cause damage to many homes, but for livestock, the water could mean a better spring with greener grass.

Aho says her horses have been stuck to confinement because of all the snow on the ground on her 100+ acres of land.

When the snow finally melts the horses can get back out and roam around with the potential for a special treat thanks to all the snow and water on the ground.

"The grass will be better and stronger, which will be nice for the horses. Eating hay all summer isn`t the best," says Aho.

"Anybody with livestock the snow will help get the pastures going quicker hopefully it will give us good hey crops this year. Last couple of years we didnt`t get rain till late in the season then you couldn`t get the hey off the ground." says Doug Aho a livestock owner.

The wet grounds will also mean better hay for the livestock in the winter.
