Students Help Neighbors in Need

| Emily Tescher -Johnston and her family live right on the border of Ward and McHenry counties. Their back yard is the Souris River. "I didn`t sleep the night before last. I had to find out what are situation was," says Tescher-Johnston. The Tescher-Johnstons dyke was surveyed at 20.5 feet. The souris river is estimated to crest at 24 feet. "After watching the news, we decided to be proactive," says Tescher-Johnston. Tescher-Johnston called McHenry county sheriff, Marv Sola, to see if she could get some help. "We`ve been working together," says Sola. Tescher-Johnston needs 7000 to 8000 sandbags to help keep her home dry. It`s no doubt that this family is going to need some help. "It`s been a lot of phone calls to line everyone up," says Sola. Sand trucks arrived with a full load, and students from Velva high school showed up with shovels in hand ready to help this family fight the possible flood. "It`s great! That`s North Dakota though," says Sola. Students were not afraid to jump in. They were either shoveling snow away from the house, shoveling, filling, and tying sandbags, or placing them around the home. "It`s such a blessing, I`m just so touched," says Tescher-Johnston. The Tescher-Johnston`s couldn`t be more appreciative of these young men and women who stepped up to help them fight mother nature. |
