The hallways at Des Lacs-Burlington High School were quiet today.
That`s because there`s a much more pressing concern outside.
This week`s Education in Action gives us a lesson in sandbagging.
This is not your typical first hour high school class but Des Lacs-Burlington students were putting an A-plus effort into the project.
"I`m sandbagging and holding bag so she can put sand in," says Kami Hanson a Junior.
About 200 students from the high school were helping to fill sandbags today. The city of Burlington needs about 75,000 bags to protect the city from flood water as the Des Lacs river is expected to crest in about three days.
"I just like volunteering my time cause we are a small community and we like to help others," says Taylor Holte a Senior.
And that giving spirit is what teachers and administrators are hoping the students will take away from this experience.
"Community involvement is very important. I think the students are learning that, the hands on way," says science teacher Thom Schmid.
On April 8th, students managed to fill about 5,000 bags. The next day they wanted to increase that number...and by 3:00 p.m. 7,000 bags were filled.
The energy and enthusiasm the high schoolers are demonstrating as they work to fill bags, tie bags, and stack bags, is awe inspiring. Part of that energy comes from the fact that it is their friends and neighbors who are impacted by the potential flood.
"An individual can`t stand along. No man is an island. You need everybody to help and we hope this is just the beginning of a new phase of their life and they go forward as people from here who will contribute to people and society," says Superintendent Clark Ranum.
So while the students may not be learning math and science, they are gaining something much greater...a life lesson they won`t soon forget.
The Students were not the only ones making a huge contribution. Kenmare Fire Fighters were in Burlington helping with the sandbag efforts. Habitat for Humanity has put their construction projects on hold so volunteers can help fight floods.
