After the National Weather System posted the latest flood forecasts last night, city leaders in Velva saw that their town was at risk.
At 9:00 a.m on Wednesday morning, an emergency meeting was called to order as city leaders said they are not taking the latest flood forecasts lightly.
"We do have city maintenance working and they are preparing parts of the town for the flood," says Cindy Shattuck, Velva Mayor.
Shattuck says it`s been a long time since the town has seen flooding and she says people need to be prepared.
"We`ve been waiting to hear what is going to happen. We have had a couple meetings. There are a few gates and levees in town that need to be closed," says Shattuck.
One of the levees that may be closed on friday is called the stop log. Workers will put up a metal gate to prevent water from flowing into the city.
"This trailer court is one part of town that is outside of the levee," says Scott Blotter, Velva Street Commissioner.
The trailer court is just feet away from the stop log. Workers were surveying the area today, to see what kind of trouble the trailer park would face if the river crests at the 15.08 and 15.10 marks that are predicted.
"Main Street in trailer parker is 15.11. It should be ok," says Nathan Chilson, City Engineer.
Chilson says even though the park may be safe, things can change in a hurry.
"If all of a sudden river crests at 15.12, they will be in trouble so they need to stay on their toes," says Chilson.
They are not just talking about trailer court residents, but are asking the whole town to come together to prepare for one of the biggest battles of their lives.
The city is asking for volunteers to help fill 5000 sandbags. Sandbagging will take place on the east side of Verendrye Electric on Friday at 9:00 a.m. |
