Arlis Jochim purchased her house in 1972. Almost 40 years later, after three kids, grand kids and great grand kids, she still calls it home.
Just 2 years ago, Arlis was using a cane to get around while she cared for her 102 year old father. Household chores were never an easy task.
"I could never take him anywhere unless I got someone to come and help me take him down the steps," she said.
And that`s where Rebuilding Together stepped in.
"I had got so far behind and my flower beds were grown over and with all the winds we`ve had, the trees had a lot of dead branches and they cleaned all that up."
The volunteer group gave Arlis a new garage door. They cut her grass, painted her fence and built a ramp for her wheelchair-bound father.
"It was cold and it started to rain and I felt so sorry. These people would not give up. They were down, ladies with nice hair-dos and manicured nails were down on their knees cleaning my flower beds."
Her father has since died, but the ramp that was originally installed for him, is now helping her get in and out of the house. Arlis` family is just one of about a hundred that Rebuilding Together has helped through out the years. This weekend, the organization bowled their way to raised money for even more homes, which will be fixed for this year`s Rebuilding Day in April.
"It`s the people that in their younger years, they gave to the community. They were all givers. It`s always nice to be able to come back in and thank them by keeping them home," said Peggy Shireley, from Rebuilding Together.
For Arlis, it`s a home that she doesn`t plan on leaving anytime soon.
"I don`t want to give it up that`s for sure. I`d like to stay as long as I could and what they did for me, just let me stay a few years more, I think."
It`s about rebuilding together.... a home sweet home.
