Economy Effecting College Bound | Video
11/14/2008
Gas prices may rise and fall dramatically, but higher education costs have been steadily going up year after year. And it`s no big mystery why.

"75% of it is the budget and salary, and benefits for teachers. You have to find some way to pull for those," says Ron Dorn, MSU Vice President.

Molly Vinje and Teresa Iverson are seniors at the Magic City Campus and they`re wondering how they`ll be able to afford college.

"That is one of our worries. We have to pay off loans and will we end up with good paying jobs?" asks Iverson.

"I figured I could afford Minot State. Going out of state. It`s probably about four times as much. I didn`t want to take out that many loans," says Vinje.

Guidance Counselors are encouraging students to stay in state and pay far less for tuition.

"Paying back college loans is in extensive problem. The average national debt to pay is $20,000 to pay back for loans," says Jani Thomas, Guidance Counselor, Magic City Campus

And that number is expected to keep growing because tuition, books, and fees won`t be going down.

"It`s harder to buy a car, It`s harder to go to school," says Dorn.

Out-of-state tuition can be as much as five times higher. A survey by Applywise.com found 70% of families looking for less expensive college options because of economic concerns.

"It`s one of those things they don`t want you to worry about it yet. But you know they`re worried," says Iverson.

Cost is never the only consideration when exploring college options, but it certainly has been playing an increasingly larger role.
