Some residents in Ward County may need to purchase costly insurance, that is the worry of the Ward County Commissioners.
On November 6th, the commissioners reviewed a letter sent by the Corps of Engineers and FEMA. Since Hurricane Katrina, FEMA requires all levies to be inspected by an engineer. If this is not completed within 24 months, the levies will be de-certified and deemed high-risk and flood insurance will be required for buildings with mortgages. The problem is, FEMA and the Corps have found no engineers or firms that will certify the levies.
"What this letter is saying is if everybody who has a levy does not get it certified by an engineer, everybody behind the levy will be back to buying flood insurance. And as everybody knows who lived in Minot through the flood and insurance days it is very very costly," says Jerome Gruenberg of the Ward County Commission.
The Commissioners are going to contact the congressional delegation for their help in this matter. |
