Giving, Getting Online | Video

Freecycle.org is a site that lets you give away your old items, and pick up new ones, without any bartering allowed. Users post items they`re hoping to get rid of, and other members of the group use e-mails to get those items for themselves.

"They actually encourage you not just to respond to the first person who e-mails you, but make an e-mail, send it out, then get some replies and see, if there`s somebody you think really needs it," says Peter Schultz, who uses the site.

Schultz has been part of Free Cycle for about three years, and says it`s a way to get rid of things around the house you don`t want anymore, without having to take them to the trash.

"People who don`t want to throw things away that may have value to someone, but not to them anymore, like a couch or a bed, or whatever," Schultz says. "Instead of just throwing it away, or putting it in your basement or something, you can find somebody that will just take it."

If you`re looking for a particular item, you can post a want-ad. If you`re looking to get rid of something, add a message telling the group. For everyone else, you can browse through the items, and pick out what you want.

"To some people, it`s total junk and they would never want it," Schultz says. "To other people, it`s valuable, and so they`re doubly grateful, because they haven`t had to pay for it. I think that`s about as green as you can get."
