North Dakota elementary and high school students are headed back to the classroom. State officials expect their numbers to be down this year.
Tom Decker is the director of school finance and organization for the state Department of Public Instruction. He says North Dakota has 184 operating public school districts this year, down from 188 last year. The total enrollment is not yet known but it`s expected to be less than last year`s total of 94,057. Decker says the trend is for a decline ranging from 1.5 percent to 2 percent a year.
Some schools have been scrambling to find teachers.
Superintendent Kelly Taylor, of the MLS cooperative based in Mohall, said his school recruited two former teachers. He says one will teach the first half and one the second half, but neither is too thrilled about it.
Kelly said the state needs to look at ways to encourage people to work in rural areas. |
