Record Turnout for ND Caucus
Brandi Powell
2/6/2008
Republicans and Democrats say yesterday`s North Dakota caucuses were a success.

Mitt Romney won the Republican contest; Barack Obama was the tops for Democrats.

Party leaders say they had a record turnout.

Mike Schatz, the Executive Director of the North Dakota Republican party says Republicans brought in nearly 10,000 caucus-goers in their hour and a half event.

Jamie Selzler, the Executive Director of the Democratic Party says Democrats had nearly 20,000 people caucus during a six-hour period.

Even though both say they were pleased with turnout, they opened up about what needs to be changed or improved.

"It might be longer," says Schatz. "We might have more polling locations. It`s up to the state committee. But we`re going to live and learn with the situation. I know a lot of people called in and said it was the best event they had ever been to as a Republican, and that`s something."

"I think the party rules in the state law should be changed to allow for 17-year-olds to vote as long as they`re 18 at the time of the General Election," says Selzler. "We had a lot of young people that voted at the college campuses, had record turnout, and a huge turnout for Democrats yesterday and so we think we would have had additional turnout if 17-year-olds could vote."

Schatz and Selzler say if any changes are made, they`d likely have to be made legislatively or through the state committee.
