The state Board of Higher Education is choosing the next president of Dickinson State University.

Board members are in Dickinson to interview Bruce Speck, a provost and vice president of Austin Peay State University in Tennessee and Richard McCallum, vice president for academic affairs at Missouri Southern State University.

The new president will succeed Lee Vickers. Vickers is retiring at the end of the year.

Board members had hoped to interview three finalists. But the third, Joseph Bascuas, withdrew yesterday. He`s a former president of Medaille College in Buffalo, New York.

Board of Higher Education president John Paulsen says he`s comfortable with having only two finalists for the Dickinson job.

University system chancellor Bill Goetz says Bascuas had some second thoughts about taking the Dickinson presidency.
