It wasn`t there when they needed it the most. Thousands of gallons of diesel fuel is purchased during the fall for farmers to finish their harvest, but suppliers have been in short supply recently.
Al Medler is selling off-road diesel fuel for $3.20 today. Obviously everyone wants to pay less but since we rely so heavily on fuel, big problems arise when we can`t get it.
"Not nearly as bad, but it`s still a problem," says Medler.
Medler works for Magic City Oil which is a small distributor in the Minot area. He gets fuel from two different fuel distributors and they get it from the refinery. He first started seeing problems around Labor Day. It got so bad that he couldn`t get any gasoline. He had to get a truckload hauled in from Barnesville, Minnesota. The issues then switched to diesel during the busy harvest season. Medler was able to fulfill all of his customers requests, but it wasn`t easy.
"I was doing my job but I was spending 90% of my time on the telephone trying to find the product and if I did find the product you didn`t know what you were going to pay and you didn`t know when it was coming. There were promises that did come through and some promises that didn`t come through and it was out of the suppliers hands," says Medler.
Off-road diesel supplies are better, but Medler still can not quote his customers a solid price because he doesn`t know where his fuel is coming from and the market is fluctuating so much, and if you want winter diesel, don`t both asking.
"I can`t get it, I don`t have it and I can`t quote prices," says Medler.
It`s effecting consumers bottom line and distributors like Medler`s bottom line. Hopefully supplies will increase soon to keep everyone traveling down the road.
"Hopefully this will straighten out soon," says Medler.
Medler says his suppliers told him winter off-road diesel fuel could be available soon.
