State School Superintendent Wayne Sanstead says legislators appropriated millions of dollars in years past to get schools to consolidate. Now, he says, the thinking has changed.
Sanstead and school finance director Tom Decker says schools officials have to get creative in sharing services and using distance learning. They say even the one-room school model may have
some advantages.
Voters in the Goodrich and McClusky school districts, and patrons in the Steele-Dawson, Tappen, Pettibone and Tuttle districts are scheduled to vote on mergers tomorrow.
Preliminary figures put North Dakota`s public school enrollment at about 93,800 this year. Decker says that`s down about 1,800 from last year.
He says that with the distance between some rural communities, it might make more sense to keep small schools open and share services. He says flexible scheduling also could be a key. |
