History of Toys for Tots
In 2003 Michelle Tait and Mindy Cook saw a need in the Bismarck area for a Christmas program that was focused specifically on children. They took it upon themselves to start a Toys for Tots in Bismarck/Mandan. The fist years we chaotic, setting up in the Days Inn breakfast room and taking down the same day, after several years the need grew and they moved into Gateway Mall. They held all campaign distributions every year until 2011 when they were offered a space in Mandan by Kupper Automotive.
In 2011 Toys for Tots came under the umbrella of the Abused Adult Resource Center, providing not only a well know agency but staff to ensure that the program continue to grow as it has for 9 years already. 2012 brought Toys for Tots back to Gateway Mall in the old Hansen's Menswear, occupying half of the over 2,000 square foot space.
Currently there are over 750 Toys for Tots campaigns around the county, mostly operating on Marine bases and reserve units. Occasionally, as in the case of the Bismarck campaign, a local community organization (LCO) will run a program in an area that does not have a base or reserve unit.
