JULI MCDONALD
Medical Reporter
I'm so thrilled to be beginning my reporting career here at KFYR. I was offered the medical reporter position just a few weeks after graduating college, and I didn't think twice before packing my clothes and making the 1800 mile drive west!
I grew up just south of Boston in Norwood, Massachusetts. I first became interested in journalism while taking a communications course taught by an amazing teacher at my high school, Ursuline Academy. I earned my degree in Broadcast Journalism from Emerson College in Boston. The school has a fantastic journalism program and it was my first choice when applying to colleges. I cried the day I was accepted! While studying at Emerson, I worked as a news writer for Emerson's radio station, WERS FM, and also as a reporter for the school's award winning TV station, WEBN. I covered the city's historic mayoral election in 2009, and also exciting events such as President Obama's visit to Boston.
Outside of Emerson, I was lucky to also gain experience through an unbelievable internship at Fox 25 in Boston. For nine months, I worked alongside the Investigative Team. I learned so much about the business from some of the most intelligent and creative people I've ever met. The best stories to work on were the ones which brought about change in the community. The I-team unveiled misuse of government funds, removed illegal products from store shelves, and shed light on countless other scams. Following Fox 25, I learned a little about production during an internship at New England Cable News. I worked in the control room during their Good Morning Live newscasts.
Throughout college, I worked as a patient representative in a busy emergency room just outside of Boston. I've always had an interest in the medical field, but despite my mother's wishes for a nurse, I dreamed of reporting! It really feels like the best of both worlds to be learning about and reporting on such an important field everyday! I especially love when I get to share the personal stories of people in the community.
When I'm not working, I'm most likely shopping, working out or talking to the people I love back on the East Coast. I have always played basketball and soccer, so I look forward to being outside during the long-awaited North Dakota summers!
I'm always looking for stories, so if you have a medical or health story idea, email me at jmcdonald@kfyrtv.com.
One more thing-- Go Red Sox! :)
